SANTIAGO. - Dominican Republic must resume its exporting culture, taking advantage of the Dr-Cafta trade accord's opportunities, to contribute with new investments and to create jobs, said Santiago Retailers and Industrialists Association (ACIS) president Luis N?yesterday.

In a gathering with members of the U.S. Supermarkets Owners National Association (NSA), the ACIS president said that from its importance to this country, fundamentally after the Dr-Cafta took effect, the NSA can and must play a major strategic role. "To count on the support of this institution is a competitive advantage, especially if we seek to reduce the impact that this agreement will have on the national agriculture and agribusiness."

Nu?said Dominicans affiliated with the NSA currently direct and with a growing market 362 large supermarkets with estimated sales of over US$3 billion in the U.S. He said the gathering's objective is to extend the social and business links between Dominican producers and the supermarket owners.

For his part, NSA president Francisco Jorge said the positioning of Dominican tropical products in the U.S. will depends on their quality, prices and presentation. He said in the past they tried to revive negotiations with producers and intermediaries to place their produce in U.S. supermarkets, but failed.

Jorge said this time there's a different perspective because of greater willingness now, and the ACIS' persistence will be crucial to reach that goal. He listed vegetables, avocados and mangos as the most popular products.
