Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic's entire territory will be geologically mapped by 2010, despite the fact that the country has only had a geological service since 1998, in contrast with countries that have had such a service for decades, and still don't have complete maps of their territory.

This was the conclusion reached by experts from 15 countries who met in Santo Domingo and recommended that the geology and mining departments should have legal and budgetary autonomy in order to preserve the Dominican Republic's geo-mining heritage.

This would ensure the preservation of the environment, helping protect the country against the effects of climate change, soil erosion and loss of water sources, as well as mitigation against natural disasters and public awareness about potential natural disasters.
